Vietnam and Spain established diplomatic relations dated 05.23.1977.
    Since 1990, Spain to actively support Vietnam in the normalization of relations with financial institutions, the International Monetary and promoting relations between Vietnam and the EU.
    The two sides discussed a number of high-level visits to increase contacts and discuss measures to promote cooperation between the two countries. In particular, during the visit of the Spanish State President Nguyen Minh Triet in December 2009, the two sides have established relations «strategic partnership towards the future».

    On trade: Spain is one of the EU countries have growth rates of trade with us at a high level, reaching 30% / year over the past few years, namely the period 2001-2008 are as follows: 2001: 205.4 million; 2002: 245.7 million; 2003: 313.2 million; 2004: 406.6 million; 2005: $ 470 million; 2006: $ 650 million; 2007: $ 860 million and 2008: 1 billion 160 million US dollars; 2009: 1 billion 150 million US dollars; 9 months of 2010: 915 million.
    The export items of Vietnam to Spain include seafood, coffee, textiles and shoes.
    On investment: Spain has 17 FDI projects in Vietnam with 21 million registered FDI: is the project's largest producer enamels and paints in Ba Ria - Vung Tau (3.6 million); Project No. 2 is the Production Premium insulation in Vinh Phuc (2.4 million USD).
    Overall, Vietnam has made 98 million dollars in total 315 million USD in ODA Spain in three Financial Protocol. February 2008, the two sides signed a financial cooperation program 4th whereby Spain pledged for Vietnam is about 80 million euros for 2008-2010 ODA priority infrastructure sectors, energy, communications, water management and 3 million non-refundable aid to help Spanish companies do record all kinds of projects that mutually agreed
    About culture: 6/2006, the two sides signed an agreement on cooperation Culture, Education and Science. Since then the two sides have jointly organized many cultural activities such as: The Vietnam Culture Day in Spain in two major cities of Madrid and Barcelona (29 / 9-10 / 10/2005); Flamenco dancing delegation on the occasion of festival performances in Vietnam. Spain during the visit of President 12/2009, Vietnam held a Vietnam Days in Spain with many cultural activities, economic diversity.
    Tourism: over time, cooperation in this field has achieved encouraging results. Vietnam tourism industry has participated and organized many promotion activities such as market master launch events, trade fairs, seminars and international regions was held in Spain on the occasion of Global Expo Exhibition Razagoza 2008 .
    Regarding education and training: in recent years, cooperation in this field has made progress, but still focus primarily on the activities of language training. In 2005, the Spanish Department was established at the University of Hanoi and received the support of Spain on the facilities, currently has two Spanish teachers to teach; in 1998-2008, you have granted 140 scholarships to Vietnam (2007: 12; 2008: 17 scholarships).
